THANK YOU! I don’t understand why Barbie gets so much hate. As a little girl I played with Barbie nonstop. I had the dream houses, cars, boats…everything. But here’s the thing, the women in my Barbie family all had jobs. In fact, the mother was a single parent raising all her kids alone. Ken only came when she got bored. I know it sounds silly to talk about a doll’s life like its real, but my point is that Barbie is more than a plastic figure. She can be ANYTHING, whatever you want her to be. Barbie is a way for a little girl (or boy, no gender bias here) to express his or her dreams.
Nowhere does it expressly say on the box that Barbie’s shiny red Corvette was a gift from Ken. Or that Barbie’s wardrobe was paid for with daddy’s American Express card. And, just because Barbie comes with a kitchen set doesn’t mean she is propagating some gender stereotype. In fact, if anything, she shows us you can be a housewife and a kick ass veterinarian at the same time.
At the end of the day, a doll is a doll. I never once looked at my Barbie and said “Damn, I gotta get my waist that skinny”. Instead my Barbie inspired me to work for the life and things she had, with or without a man by my side.
